The Power of Personal Thank You Notes
You are not in the business you think you’re in! You are actually in the business of building personal relationships. Accepting this principle and deploying it via multiple channels is an extremely powerful business building technique.
Think for a moment . . . . How often are you personally contacted by anyone with whom you do business? Remember the last time a business personally thanked you for having done business with that organization. The truth is you may not be able to remember having been thanked personally.
When . . . and if . . . you were, didn’t that business stand out rivited in your mind? . . . permanently! See how powerful that “thank you” was to you?
While it is unfortunate more businesses never realize that power of the personal thank you, that should be a “heads-up” for the savvy business owner interested in rapid growth.
If you do not yet have the physical addresses and email addresses, begin collecting them TODAY! Remember, your list is everything! It is one of your businesses most valuable assets–possibly THE most valuable asset . . . . But . . . only if you use it well!
Start doing that today!
You will employ this channel in the process of developing the “affinity bond” with each of your customers. A powerful affinity bond with your customers is a psychological tie that is difficult to break and YOU have the main control of it. You can reach out with the bonding threads time and time again until an anchoring rope results, tying your customers to you for the life of your business.
Begin a process of sending each of your customers a personalized thank you note–the first time you do business with them AND on every subsequent sale or service. You can do this several ways, but one is to keep a stack of blank notes in your office. Each time you have contact with a customer or potential customer, write out the note, address the envelope, stamp, and mail it THAT day.
Remember, it is not what you say that is important; its importance is that you made the gesture. You can simply say, “Thank you for the privilege of serving you today.” and sign it.
Business owners will sometimes say to me, “That is too many notes for my business.” My response is, “Wrong!” While that may be true for multiple sales of low-cost items–the rare business–it is the very unusual business for which this strategy is NOT appropriate.
If you are focused solely on this sale this day, you are missing most of the money your business has to offer. Instead, you should focus on and cultivate the continued business of that customer. Few businesses can really afford to avoid this powerful marketing tool.
How will personalized thank you notes stimulate word of mouth? Imagine how willingly you would tell friends and relatives of a business that mailed you a personal card!
Furthermore, you can expand this process into an even more powerful business building tool we will examine in a later message.
If you would rather not hand write this many thank you notes, here is an option to automate the process while remaining personal. Another advantage to this process is the continued mailings of personal notes for various occasions throughout the year, such as Thanksgiving, Holidays, anniversaries, and even “just because” notes.
