How Good Is Your Best?

Is Your Best Really Your Best?

You may say you have the best product or service, the best engineering, the best customer service, or the best of whatever you are discussing.

My question is, “Best compared to what?”  You may say, “Well, Paul, we are the best in our industry!”  I would say that it is good to be the best in your industry or market area.  That is fine but it is not really the question that should be addressed.

I would then ask, “Is yours the best you can produce and deliver?”  If the answer is anything other than, “Yes,” you have some work to do yet in making it the very best you can do.

Why would that make any difference, especially if you are the best in your industry or market place?

Very simply, if you are not doing your best, someone else–a competitor–can come along, analyze your performance, and do it one better.  Suddenly, you have been surpassed because you were sitting back on your heels!  Now you spend your time and money clawing and scratching your way back up.  The only problem is that your competition is now on top of the hill setting the standards which you must meet.

Of course, even when you are doing your best, you may still be surpassed.  In that event you can say you were simply beaten in the marketing olympics.

However, . . . simply by doing your very best you will make most potential competitors move to some other event.

Never assume you have the best product, etc., you can always improve it.  Work ceasely to improve everything about your business!

To your business success!
